On behalf of everyone at the Power Workers’ Union (PWU), it gives me great pleasure to welcome all unionized employees from Alectra Utilities into our Membership.
The official results from the representation vote that was conducted by the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB) on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 are as follows:
Total number of eligible voters 1024
Total number of ballots cast 852
Total number of votes for the PWU 591
Total number of votes for IBEW Local 636 167
Total number of votes for Unifor Local 1285 94
Spoiled ballots 1
This first ballot majority establishes the PWU as the sole bargaining agent for all unionized employees at Alectra Utilities.
Alectra was formed through the merger of PowerStream, Horizon Utilities and Enersource and the subsequent purchase of Hydro One Brampton – finalized on February 27, 2017. Alectra is the second largest utility in Ontario – only Hydro One is larger.
The PWU is extremely pleased with the result and we will work hard to help Alectra employees share in the benefits that a merger of this size should bring and to provide the best possible representation to all members involved.
The first orders of business will be to establish an elected representation structure, prepare for bargaining and meet with the employer to begin planning the path forward.
Our future together is bright, and today the PWU – the voice of Ontario’s electricity sector workers, is stronger than ever.
In solidarity,
Mel Hyatt
President – Power Workers’ Union
