Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) sought comments on a Clean Electricity Standard (CES) discussion paper regarding a net-zero emissions electricity system by 2035 and the prevention of using carbon-emitting electricity generating sources to meet demand growth. The PWU response identifies that a net zero goal by 2035 is impossible for Ontario, but such a goal should be pursued as soon as practically possible. The PWU identified that with proper analysis, it would be clear that Ontario’s biomass and nuclear capabilities are the key to success and should be supported. The PWU recommended that the government ensure that gas-fired generation is subject to the full carbon price as soon as possible if it wishes to accelerate the transition.
